That pursing motion we like to do from time to time, you know, when we pucker up — can cause tiny vertical lips to form across the top of your upper lip. Why does this happen? Because lips are in part shaped from collagen and as we age, the body produces less of this essential protein so our lips begin to loss their plumpness.
The vertical lines can also cause you to look less youthful. In spite of the aging factor, here are a few things you can do to ward off or at least diminish these lines if they have started to appear:
Skin Resurfacing – Depending on how noticeable your lines have become, targeting those tiny lines with chemical peels or microdermabrasion in appropriate strengths. Sensitive skin may experience a pigmentation issue around the lips after a peel or laser treatment, so be sure to discuss this with your medical provider.
Moisturize and Exfoliate – To get free of dryness and dead skin, follow a regular regimen of moisturizing and exfoliating your lips. Be care not to scrub your lips too hard or your lips will become irritated. Using lip balm regularly is helpful also to protect your lips from drying out due to the sun and other environmental effects.
Quit Smoking – Smoking has many drastic effects on the body in general. One of the noticeable ones is darkening of lips and skin around the mouth. Additionally, the repetitive pursing of your lips breaks down the collagen that keeps your lips soft and supple.
Hydrating Lipstick – Instead of long lasting, look for a lipstick with moisturizing properties to keep your lips protected and nourished. If you plan on doing some serious kissing, you may want to go with a nude lipstick or lip stain.
Lip Filler – Since a major component of the deep vertical lines is deflation or loss of fat in the lips during aging or pursing of the lips, filler injections like Juvéderm or Restylane can be used to improve the appearance of these lines. A small injection of Botox can also be used o lessen the muscle movement that can cause the lines to form.
