Here at Wake Health Medical Group in Raleigh, laser hair removal continues to be a major treatment that we perform nearly every day. While shaving and waxing are both popular hair removal methods, advances in laser technology have produced devices that will reduce hair permanently with less pain.
A laser treatment for facial hair is safe and effective. Facial hair in women can be hereditary, but also is influenced by hormone levels and fluctuations.
Benefits of laser hair removal include:
Precision – The laser only targets pigmented areas on the skin, such as the hair follicle. The surrounding area is left undamaged.
Speed – Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.
Predictability – Laser hair removal has been proven to be extremely effective. Hair removal lasers have been in use for over a decade and have been approved for “permanent hair reduction” in the United States by the FDA. According to the FDA, “permanent hair reduction” is defined as being the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regimen. Most patients have permanent hair loss after an average of three to seven sessions.
While laser hair removal can permanently reduce body hair, it has not been scientifically proved that it’s capable of permanently removing ALL body hair. Laser hair removal treatments are most effective when the hair that needs to be removed is caught in the early part of the anagen stage — when the hair is actively growing. This is why getting a series of laser hair removal treatments is so important; for example, every 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients report that after a series of sessions, there’s a significant reduction in the amount of body hair that grows back. The hair that does grow back tends to be sparse, fine and lighter in color.
Reduces Ingrown Hairs – Ingrown hairs are caused when the hair is broken off unevenly with a sharp tip, such as from shaving or waxing. So, with laser hair removal, there’s less chance of getting ingrown hair because the area is not shaved or waxed. Additionally, as we stated above, when the hair does grow back after a laser hair removal treatment, the hair tends to be sparse and fine. The change in hair texture reduces the chance of having ingrown hairs even more.
